An All-Aluminum-Alloy Conductor (AAAC) is a high-performance, concentric-lay-stranded conductor made entirely from a high-strength aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy (commonly Aluminum Alloy 6201). It's designed to provide an excellent balance of strength, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance for overhead transmission and distribution lines.

Key Features and Advantages

  •  Material: Composed of high-strength, heat-treated aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy wires (like AAAC 6201), which gives it superior mechanical properties over pure aluminum (AAC).4

  • High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: The alloy provides significantly greater strength than pure aluminum conductors, allowing for longer spans and reducing the need for support structures, thereby lowering overall construction costs.5

  •  Superior Corrosion Resistance: Due to the absence of a steel core (unlike ACSR), AAAC offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, making it ideal for use in coastal regions and highly polluted industrial areas.6

  •  Better Electrical Properties: AAAC has higher conductivity and lower electrical losses than an Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) of equal diameter, often allowing it to carry 15-20% extra current.7

  •  Improved Sag Characteristics: The better strength-to-weight ratio leads to less sag under various load and environmental conditions compared to other aluminum conductors.8

  •  Surface Hardness: The conductor material has a higher surface hardness (around 80 BHN compared to ACSR's 35 BHN), which reduces damage during handling and contributes to lesser corona loss and radio interference at Extra-High Voltages (EHV).9

  •  Thermal Performance: AAAC can operate stably at higher continuous temperatures (typically up to 10$90^\circ\text{C}$ or 11$95^\circ\text{C}$) compared to standard ACSR conductors (typically up to 12$75^\circ\text{C}$).13

  •  Longer Lifespan: Better corrosion resistance contributes to an extended operational lifespan, often cited as being over 60 years
